AI tools for civil, water & infrastructure engineers
The weekly digest from aecaiindex.com. Five picks, one quick take, under five minutes.

Welcome
Hi there,
Most AI tool directories are built for architects and general contractors. Look for something to help with sewer CCTV, a lead service line inventory or a Civil 3D grading plan and you find renderers and floor-plan generators. One of the biggest AEC tool directories doesn't even have a water, wastewater, utilities or civil category.
So I started AEC AI Index: a curated directory, currently 84 tools, written for people like us who design and run pipes, roads, plants and networks. I work in the AEC industry, so the filter is simple: would I send this to a colleague?
Each week: five tools worth a look, one practical take, no hype. Tell me what's useful and what isn't.

This week's 5 picks
1 |
Civil & Infrastructure
Automated grading and pipe network design inside Civil 3D.
Use case: Worth a look if early site layouts keep bouncing between grading and storm/sanitary revisions. Because it runs inside Civil 3D, you can trial it on a past project and compare against what your team actually built.

|
|
2 |
Water & Wastewater
AI defect coding and data management for sewer CCTV inspections.
Use case: Useful when a CCTV backlog is holding up condition assessment or capital planning. Run a batch your reviewers have already coded and compare the results before you trust it at scale.
|
|
|
3 |
Water & Wastewater
Satellite radar analytics that pinpoint likely underground water leaks.
Use case: Fits non-revenue-water programs: use the flagged areas to target where acoustic crews go first, instead of sweeping the whole system.

4 |
Civil & Infrastructure
Vehicle-mounted LiDAR and imagery turned into AI pavement, sign and asset inventories for cities.
Use case: Relevant if you support municipal clients on pavement management or asset inventories and the current data is a decade-old spreadsheet.
|
|
|
5 |
GIS & Utilities
AI-assisted digitizing of scanned maps and imagery into GIS vector features. Free tier available.
Use case: Try it on scanned utility atlas sheets or old as-builts that never made it into GIS. The free tier makes it a low-risk test, and you still QC the linework.

Most of these are "contact sales." Ask for a pilot on your own data before you sign anything.

Quick take
|
Civil 3D's AI assistant can check your standards. Pilot it, don't sign off with it.
Autodesk Assistant in Civil 3D 2027 now has a Tech Preview that can check the current drawing against a standards file, pick objects from a plain-language prompt, list things like layers and block usage, and analyze surface slope ranges (Autodesk docs). At AU 2026 in September, Autodesk also made Civil 3D a Forma Connected Client (Autodesk News). For CAD managers that standards check could be genuinely useful, but Autodesk itself says the preview results "may not be accurate." My suggestion: run it next to your existing standards check on a few finished drawings, log where the two disagree, and only then decide whether it earns a place in your QA/QC workflow. Until then, a person still signs the sheet.
